Mistaken Identity

Having been recently welcomed to the army the day before, early in the morning Mateus began to explore the luxurious hotel that the group was using as their current base of operations in order to familiarize himself with the place. Only two Wyverns were by Mateus's side during this little escapade were Adrammelech and Shemhazia the early risers of the Wyverns. "Gee....this place is so overly huge. I would have thought we'd have a simple camp or something not what amounts to a mansion...."

"Excuse me! Sirrah!" After a ride through Fosita's intimidating boulevards, a young lady in a short black gown came up behind Mateus. Her pomegranate-tinted eyebrows hung low over her wide, violet eyes, clearly demonstrating her discomfort in the sprawling manor. "Escort me to the guest rooms at once. And I'll have need of an extra towel, before the day's through." Her mouth tilted in a slight smile. "Understood?"

Mateus looked at the woman with a confused look. Does she think I work here? Guess wearing the apron here would do that... "I'm sorry ma'am but I don't know where the guest rooms are or where the towels would be. Wouldn't one of the workers here know that?" At the appearance of this new person the two Wyverns greeted her with happy little shrieks.

The stableboy's cluelessness completely inverted her smile, and a stern hand falls to her hip. "..I'd assumed so, yes, but it seems my standards were--Eeah!" She hopped back from the reptiles accompanying him, eyes even wider than before. They looked just like Rieze's mount, only blue and puny. Though their size clearly disqualified them as proper mounts, perhaps this was just the inevitable result of a nation of Pegasi attempting to compete with the glory of the Empire. Yet a tinge of fascination mixed with her shock, as she leaned down for a closer look at them. "Are those Wyverns? W-why on earth have you brought them inside?!

"Why would I leave them outside? They don't make a ruckus and they're nice enough!" Mateus sighed as he scratched his head. Thank goodness I don't have all eight with me otherwise she might be freaking out even more. "But leaving them outside isn't happening. I love these little guys too much to just leave them in a stable. And Finn and the Hotel Staff said it was okay to have them stay in here so if they said its okay then it must be okay!"

"I suppose...Are they really so docile, though?" Keeping the rest of her body still, Persephone's leg extended gently ahead, like the first step of a dance. She looked down at one of the cobalt-colored creatures with a softer expression, and avoided matching its gaze directly. Though her fingers twitched ever so slightly, Persephone stayed her hand, waiting to see their response to her careful approach.

"Yeah. They mean no harm. Heck Shemhazia here looks to be pretty interested in you." Persephone would notice one of the blue Wyverns looking up at her with an intense interest. Meanwhile Adrammelech just looked around the hotel. "Anyway the name is Mateus and these two here are Adrammelech and Shemhazia." Each Wyvern shrieked in response to their name being called signifying to Persephone who was who.

The wyverns' vocalized greetings surprised Persephone, and a gloved hand covered her mouth. "My! They're quite clever, aren't they." Turning to the most interested of the two, the girl bent a knee and lowered herself to its level. "...Shemhazia, was it? Heavens, you're smaller than Father's old hunting hound!" She giggled - partly at the runt's pathetic charm, and partly at herself for being so unnerved by it. She addressed their trainer plainly, with her attention gleefully fixed on the little blue beast. "These ones aren't even fully grown!"(edited)

"Well of course not they're only a year old. They probably start growing more soon enough." Meanwhile Shemhazia looked at Persephone before turning back and shrieking at Mateus. "Oh right! I never did ask for your name! Could you be so kind as to give it to me?" And hopefully I don't ask twice like last time.

"How did I get them you say? Well about a year ago, a friend of mine Paul gave me these guys when they were only precious little eggs as a gift after I helped him out of a pretty bad jam. He had gotten the eggs from a trade he had done with some Ethysian Nobility." At least that's what he told me. Though knowing him he probably just smuggled them into the country. "Anyway long story short he gave me the eggs to sell, I waited for them to hatch to make sure nothing was wrong with them and when they hatched I fell in love and decided to keep them. That's about it."

"Ethysian nobility?" In a sudden turn, the girl looked away from Shemhazia and toward Mateus. Persephone's eyebrow lifted, and a look of disgust and disbelief crossed her face at the man's tale. "Surely you don't expect me to believe such nonsense."

"It's fine I take Paul's word with a grain of salt as well. But then again I did see him trade a necklace for a Pegasus and trade that Pegasus for a Wagon soooo I really have no idea." Mateus's brow furrowed as he remembered that strange strange month he had spent with Paul. "Whatever. To me what matters is that they're healthy and happy. As long as they grow up to be a good big Wyverns that's all that matters." Mateus lifted Shemhazia up who shrieked happily while she still stared at Persephone.

"Hmm, well..." Standing, Persephone pondered the bond between them, looking closer at the little wyvern. She kept her hands clasped together to prevent herself from acting on her desire to touch it. "Just don't believe everything you hear about Ethysia."

The young lady took a deep breath, looking back to Adramalech, then to Mateus. She'd need to choose her words carefully, even just to this commoner. "I meant exactly what I said. The Empire is not as people here would deceive you into believing. It's..." Her violet eyes looked fondly upon the Wyvern in his arms. "Majestic. And there is but one nobleman-one whose presence we shan't ever earn the right to stand in..."

Mateus nodded. "Well I mean.... I doubt Ethysia is a bad place at all and there are probably many good people there. But that doesn't make up for the cruel things that those in charge are doing." Mateus looked to Persephone. "So that's why we have to strike down those villains in Ethysia so the country's true self can shine through right? At least that's what I like to believe."

Persephone ran an anxious hand through her hair, shaking her head slowly. She had thought that perhaps this man could have admired the Empire as well, the way they both admired its wyverns. But his feelings were flaccid, his conviction lukewarm. He lacked even the dignity to properly condemn the country he considered "cruel"...yet spoke his empty mind far too felt for a man of no status. "...Well, I'm certain there's many men in Arcias who share those feelings... You've more than enough to be concerned of within your own borders."

Mateus gave the woman a confused look. He felt that he had offended her in someway. "I'm sorry if I made you upset Persephone. I just spoke my mind. I just want everyone to be happy that's all. There's probably a lot more to all this then I could possibly understand so just take what I say with a grain of salt. It doesn't amount to much anyway."

Does she still think I work here for some reason? "I don't work here and even if I did just got here yesterday so I would have no idea where everything is. That's why I'm exploring the place, so I don't waste so much time that Roelia's hair starts to fall out. It shouldn't take too long to find someone who actually works here."

Mateus sighed. "Why would I lie about that? Of course I'm a soldier! If you talk to Finn he'll confirm that I am indeed in the army! I'm pretty sure its not everyday that a guy with 8 baby wyverns ask to join his group so he'll definitely remember me." Adrammelech getting bored of the standing and talking decided to run straight through the hallway. Mateus groaned as he set Shemhazia down and began to chase after the baby Wyvern. "Adra wait! You can't just run in here! You might break something!!!!" Shemhazia let out a gleeful shriek as she began to also run after the two. Quickly turning back to Persephone she shrieked out something that sounded like a goodbye before turning to catch up with the other two as they disappeared into the hallway.

After blinking a few moments more, Persephone managed to give a little wave of her hand at Shemhazia just before the three of them rounded the corner. With a florid sigh, the girl caught herself grinning at their antics. Childish as it was, her heart couldn't help but feel a little lighter after meeting their ridiculous new recruit. But mostly the baby wyverns.(edited)
